New Delhi, August 15: Premier League newcomers Hull City have officially signed forward Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United for an undisclosed fee. The announcement was made by the club on Saturday. The 24-year-old player has signed a four-year contract with Hull, which includes an option to extend his stay by another year.
Gelhardt returns to Hull City after playing a crucial role in their Championship promotion campaign last season. The versatile forward scored 20 goals in 64 appearances during two loan spells over the past 18 months. He was the second-highest scorer last season, netting a total of 15 goals, including a decisive second goal in the semi-final second leg victory against Millwall.
Born in Liverpool, Gelhardt initially joined Hull on loan in January 2025, making an immediate impact. He scored a stunning half-volley on his full debut against Queens Park Rangers. He also found the net against Plymouth Argyle, Oxford United, and Preston North End, helping secure Hull City’s place in the Championship with five goals in 20 matches by the end of the season.
Gelhardt returned to Hull City on loan last summer and scored his first league goal of the 2025/26 season in a thrilling 3-2 win over Oxford United. His performance from mid-October to early December was remarkable, with eight goals in ten matches. His goal against Leicester City, resulting from a brilliant team move, was awarded the ‘Championship Goal of the Month’ for October.
Overall, Gelhardt played 44 matches across all competitions last season, starting in 37 of them. He began his career with Wigan Athletic before moving to Leeds, where he played 35 Premier League matches during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.
Gelhardt expressed his happiness about making his return to Hull City permanent. He stated that he knew the club was his first choice as soon as last season ended. “I am very happy. The last 18 months playing here have been great, and I enjoyed every moment. When the season finished, I knew where I wanted to be. It’s great that it has happened. I have already bonded with the fans, staff, and all the players. I’m glad to be here permanently, not just on loan,” he said.
