New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a remarkable record with the average duration of his Independence Day speeches from the Red Fort, surpassing all his predecessors.
On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, compiled data reveals that Modi’s speeches average 91 minutes each. This is nearly double the second-highest average of 52 minutes held by former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. This indicates that Modi presents a comprehensive outline of development, policy announcements, and national goals in his addresses.
The data also shows a consistent increase in the duration of Independence Day speeches over the decades. Former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s speeches averaged 24 minutes, while Atal Bihari Vajpayee‘s were 30 minutes, Indira Gandhi’s 32 minutes, Manmohan Singh’s 42 minutes, Rajiv Gandhi’s 47 minutes, and Narasimha Rao’s 52 minutes.
In terms of total speaking time, Modi also leads with 1,177 minutes across 13 Independence Day addresses. This significantly exceeds Indira Gandhi’s 504 minutes from 16 speeches, Manmohan Singh’s 417 minutes from 10 speeches, and Nehru’s 400 minutes from 17 speeches.
Interestingly, despite addressing the nation fewer times than Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Modi’s total speaking time is more than double theirs. This data paints a distinct picture, showcasing that even with fewer opportunities, his total address time is the highest.
Nehru holds the record for addressing the nation 17 times on Independence Day, followed by Indira Gandhi with 16 addresses, while Modi’s 13 speeches have recorded the longest total duration.
Among other prime ministers, Narasimha Rao spoke for 259 minutes over five addresses, Rajiv Gandhi for 233 minutes over five speeches, and Vajpayee for 177 minutes across six addresses.
Over the past decade, Modi’s lengthy and content-rich speeches have established a new tradition, presenting ambitious national goals like the roadmap for a developed India by 2047. The data also indicates that the duration of Independence Day speeches has steadily increased alongside the growing agenda for national development and a broader vision.
