India Aims to Become a Global Supplier of Next-Gen Defense Technology: PM Modi

New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of “defense power” in his speech on Independence Day 2026. He stated that achieving self-reliance in defense is crucial for a developed India by 2047. Speaking from the Red Fort, he called for India to emerge as a global supplier of next-generation defense technology.

The Prime Minister asserted that there is no alternative to self-reliance in defense. As countries worldwide focus on their own benefits, India cannot remain merely a market for others. He highlighted the need to develop drones and counter-drone systems and to take a leadership role in hypersonic defense technology.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to the vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India), Modi stressed that the country must not depend on others. While some foreign products may be cheaper and readily available, relying on them does not build our own capabilities nor test our strengths. Therefore, we must strengthen our own capacities and protect our interests independently. Initiatives like “Make in India,” “Indigenous,” and “Vocal for Local” are resonating with the Indian populace.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that cybersecurity is an area where the nation can leverage the skills of its youth for both national and global benefits.

Modi emphasized the need to enhance the capabilities of the defense forces by focusing on indigenous defense equipment. He noted that the nature of warfare is changing, and there is no guarantee that conflicts will remain confined to borders. Modern warfare can target infrastructure such as refineries, the banking sector, or data centers, marking a new approach where factories and infrastructure are at risk. He mentioned the rapid progress on “Mission Suraksha Chakra,” announced a few years ago.

Reflecting on the changes in the defense sector over the past 12 years, the Prime Minister stated that defense production has increased nearly fourfold. He noted that defense exports have surged almost 50 times, with Indian weapons reaching around 100 countries. He assured that India is prepared for any challenge, whether it arises within or beyond its borders, and that the country’s reputation on the global stage is steadily rising.

Modi highlighted that creating a secure India is the responsibility of every citizen and called for better preparedness to tackle emerging threats. He pointed out that civil defense systems established in the last century have become outdated. In the coming days, a robust civil defense network will be developed, familiarizing citizens with modern systems. A large voluntary force for civil defense will be established to address contemporary challenges.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the growing role of women in nation-building, including in the defense forces. He noted that daughters graduating from the NDA are demonstrating the confidence and capability to lead the country’s military.
