
New Delhi, April 1: Maintaining continuous communication between astronauts in space and the team on Earth is crucial. Scientists utilize an advanced communication system known as the “Space Network” for this purpose. This network helps astronauts stay connected with Earth and the International Space Station (ISS).
First, it is essential to understand what the Space Network is. The Space Network comprises a group of Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS). These satellites orbit approximately 35,000 kilometers above Earth in geosynchronous orbit, functioning like cell towers in space. The space station can establish contact with TDRS satellites regardless of its position in orbit.
When an astronaut on the space station wants to send data, video, or voice to mission control, the station’s computer converts that data into radio signals. These signals reach the TDRS satellite via the station’s antenna. The TDRS then relays the information to the White Sands Complex in New Mexico, from where it is transmitted to Houston via landlines. This entire process occurs in milliseconds, ensuring there is no delay in communication.
Now, how does scientific experiment data reach Earth? Astronauts conduct several critical experiments related to physics, biology, astronomy, and meteorology aboard the space station. The scientific data obtained from these experiments is also sent to Earth through the same Space Network. The data is converted into radio signals and sent to the TDRS satellites, then relayed through White Sands and Houston to reach scientists. This system allows scientists to receive data almost in real-time.
The U.S. space agency NASA also uses this network for educational programs. Astronauts answer questions from school children via video and voice calls. Previously, astronauts could only communicate with Earth for about 15 minutes. Now, they maintain almost constant contact. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland manages the Space Network, while strategic oversight is handled by the Scan Program Office.
