How Priyanka Chopras Mother Secured Her Miss India Participation

Mumbai, July 17: Priyanka Chopra is not just a Bollywood icon; she is a global sensation. From winning the Miss World title to establishing herself in Hollywood, Priyanka serves as an inspiration for countless young women. However, her journey to the Miss India stage was far from easy.

In her autobiography, “Unfinished,” Priyanka shares untold stories from her life, including the moment she had to convince her father to allow her to participate in the Miss India competition.

Born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, Priyanka was raised in a family where education and career were highly valued. Her parents, Captain Dr. Ashok Chopra and Dr. Madhu Chopra, were both doctors in the Indian Army. In such an environment, persuading her father to enter a beauty pageant was no small feat.

At just 17 years old and busy with her studies, Priyanka received a life-changing phone call during lunch at school. The call was from Femina magazine, informing her that she had been selected for the North India round of the Miss India pageant and needed to attend the auditions in Delhi.

This news felt like a dream to Priyanka. Initially, she thought her popularity in Bareilly had caught the attention of the Miss India organizers. However, her mother later revealed that she had submitted the application on Priyanka’s behalf.

The real challenge was breaking the news to her father, who wanted her to focus on her studies with pre-board exams approaching. Discussing a beauty pageant was daunting.

Priyanka’s mother devised a plan to handle the situation delicately. She advised Priyanka to be polite when her father came home, avoid arguments, and maintain a positive atmosphere. She added, “I will talk to him over champagne.”

Her mother understood the importance of timing and approach. Ultimately, her efforts paid off. Priyanka’s father agreed, but with one condition: Priyanka could not go alone; her mother would accompany her to Delhi.

With that, Priyanka and her mother set off for Delhi by train, arriving for the initial round of Miss India. The experience was entirely new for Priyanka, who was astonished to see many contestants already connected to the modeling and fashion industries.

She never imagined she would progress so far in the competition; it was merely a new experience for her. Yet, this experience turned out to be a pivotal moment in her life. After winning Miss India, Priyanka never looked back.

In 2000, she claimed the Miss World crown and subsequently ventured into films. Today, she is not only an international star but also a producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.
