Bhubaneswar, May 30: A shocking road accident occurred late Thursday night on National Highway-16. A speeding truck collided with a car, dragging it for nearly 600 meters. Two occupants of the car sustained serious injuries.
The incident took place near the Ganguha Bridge in Mancheswar. The truck, traveling from Mancheswar towards Pahada, was reportedly speeding when it suddenly crashed into the car ahead. The impact was so severe that the truck pulled the car along the road, creating sparks as it moved.
Witnesses described the scene as terrifying. Subrat Patnaik and his niece Aadyasha, who were in the car, were severely injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable, but the injuries are serious.
After the collision, the driver attempted to flee the scene. However, the Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police’s PCR team quickly responded and pursued the truck. They successfully intercepted it in the Pahada area. The truck driver, Jagmohan Bhukta, was arrested on the spot, and the truck was seized. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by speeding and negligence.
The Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police acted swiftly, filing an FIR against the driver for reckless driving, creating unnecessary danger, and other charges. Police are interrogating the suspect to determine the exact causes of the accident. The number of road accidents on NH-16 has been rising steadily over the past few months.
Local residents have raised concerns about the excessive speed of heavy vehicles, poor visibility at night, and overloading as major issues. They are urging the authorities to enhance surveillance on the highway, install speed bumps, and conduct nighttime checks.
