Udaipur, September 4 (Kiran News): Hindustan Zinc Limited (BSE: 500188, NSE: HINDZINC), India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has achieved a major sustainability milestone by recycling 71 billion litres of treated sewage water between FY2016 and FY2025, thereby reducing its freshwater dependence by 28%. The recycled volume is equivalent to meeting Udaipur’s water needs for more than 500 days.

Hindustan Zinc

Operating in water-stressed Rajasthan, Hindustan Zinc has established itself as a 3.32x water-positive company by treating, recycling, and reusing all process water across operations, safeguarding local ecosystems, and reinforcing its commitment to UN SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Udaipur’s First Sewage Treatment Plant under PPP

In partnership with the Government of Rajasthan, Hindustan Zinc set up Udaipur’s first sewage treatment plant (STP) in 2014 under a public-private partnership model. Over the past decade, its capacity has expanded to 60 million litres per day (60 MLD). The plant plays a vital role in preventing untreated sewage from polluting Udaipur’s lakes while supplying treated water through a dedicated pipeline to Hindustan Zinc’s operations.

CEO’s Statement

Water is a shared legacy, and at Hindustan Zinc, we’ve embraced stewardship that turns challenges into opportunities,” said Arun Misra, CEO – Hindustan Zinc Limited.
“As a 3.32x water-positive company with zero effluent discharge, we are deploying advanced technology to conserve freshwater for communities and set benchmarks in sustainable manufacturing. We remain committed to cutting freshwater consumption by 50% by 2030 and achieving 100% reuse of low-quality water in smelting.”

Sustainability Initiatives

  • Advanced effluent treatment plants at all major sites to ensure zero discharge.

  • A 4,000 KLD water treatment plant inaugurated this year at Rampura Agucha mine, the world’s largest underground zinc mine.

  • Continuous investment in water recycling technologies, ensuring enhanced capacity and reduced freshwater usage.

Global Recognition

Hindustan Zinc recently became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM). Additionally, for the second consecutive year, it was ranked the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024.

These recognitions reinforce Hindustan Zinc’s role as a benchmark setter in sustainable mining and metallurgy, proving that resource-intensive industries can grow while minimizing environmental impact. By investing in water recycling technologies, fostering community partnerships, and aligning with international sustainability frameworks, Hindustan Zinc is driving a shift toward water-resilient industrial operations in India and beyond.
