Mumbai, July 1: Veteran actress Himani Shivpuri fondly recalled the contributions of the late theater giant Vijay Mehta. She shared that Mehta not only provided her with opportunities on stage but also completely transformed her acting style, helping her forge a new identity.
Reflecting on her past, Shivpuri mentioned, “I had the chance to work with Vijay Mehta in the play ‘Hamidabai Ki Kothi.’ During this time, I realized that Mehta was a director who shaped artists from within. Working with him was a learning process that redirected my entire career.”
The actress further noted, “When audiences came to see that play, they often praised my performance, saying my voice, gait, and stage presence were entirely different. This transformation was solely the result of Mehta’s training. He instilled in me a confidence that allowed me to fully embody my character on stage.”
Shivpuri also shared an old photograph of Mehta, writing, “Vijay Mehta, affectionately known as ‘Bai,’ is no longer with us, but his teachings will always live on. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such a great personality. He had the ability to change every artist from within and provide them with a new perspective. He transformed me. Salute to the legend. Om Shanti.”
Following the news of Mehta’s passing, the film and theater community expressed deep sorrow. Veteran actress Shabana Azmi and many other prominent artists paid tribute to him.
Vijay Mehta was regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian theater and cinema. He passed away on June 30 at the age of 91.
