Shimla, October 18 (Daily Kiran): The weather in Himachal Pradesh is expected to change after Diwali, with temperatures set to drop and the possibility of snowfall in higher altitudes. At present, the skies across the state are clear, and sunny weather continues, but the Meteorological Department has forecast a shift beginning next week.

According to the Shimla Meteorological Centre, a western disturbance is likely to become active on October 21 and 22, bringing light rain and snowfall to the state’s higher mountainous regions. Meanwhile, weather in the plains and mid-hill districts will remain mostly dry.

Currently, Himachal has been experiencing clear skies for nearly two weeks, with mild humidity during the daytime and increasing chill in the mornings and evenings. In the tribal areas, temperatures have already dropped close to freezing. The state capital Shimla and other districts witnessed bright sunshine today, while dense fog was reported in Sundernagar (Mandi district), reducing visibility to just about 100 metres in the morning.

The weather department has predicted that the weather will remain clear across the state until Diwali (October 20). However, under the influence of the western disturbance, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu, Chamba, and the higher regions of Sirmaur may receive light snowfall between October 21 and 22. Conditions are expected to clear again on October 23 and 24.

Earlier this month, the state’s higher regions experienced the season’s first snowfall, which had led to a sharp drop in temperatures. Another round of snowfall is likely to intensify the cold once again.

As per the daily weather report, Keylong (Lahaul-Spiti district) recorded the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 0.8°C, followed by Kukumseri (2°C) and Tabo (3.4°C). In Kinnaur, Kalpa recorded 5.2°C, while Reckong Peo stood at 8.4°C. Manali reported 7.2°C and Kufri 12.5°C.

Interestingly, several plain districts are now recording colder nights than the hill station of Shimla. On Saturday, Shimla’s minimum temperature was 15°C, while Una recorded 14°C, Hamirpur 13.8°C, Mandi 14°C, and Kangra 13.5°C. Other readings included Sundernagar (12°C), Bhuntar (10.3°C), Dharamshala (11.8°C), Nahan (16.5°C), Solan (11.2°C), and Bilaspur (16.2°C).
