High Voter Turnout in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu Elections

Kolkata, April 23: Voter enthusiasm is palpable in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu as assembly elections unfold. By 9 AM, over 18% voter turnout was recorded in West Bengal, while Tamil Nadu saw more than 17%.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), West Bengal reported a voter turnout of 18.76% and Tamil Nadu 17.69% by 9 AM on Thursday.

The highest turnout in West Bengal was in West Medinipur district, with 20.51%. Other districts like Bankura and Jhargram followed closely with 20.20% and 19.54%, respectively. Malda recorded the lowest turnout at 16.96%.

Voting is taking place for 152 assembly seats across 16 districts in West Bengal. Voter enthusiasm is evident, with long queues forming outside many polling stations.

The 16 districts participating in this phase include Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda in northern Bengal, along with Murshidabad, East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum in southern Bengal.

The second phase of voting for the remaining 142 assembly seats in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29, with results to be announced on May 4.

Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, voting began at 7 AM for all 234 assembly seats. Over 5.73 crore eligible voters will determine the fate of 4,023 candidates in a tightly contested election.

As per the data, Tiruppur district recorded the highest turnout at 20.38%, while Ramanathapuram had the lowest at 15.54%.

The main contest in Tamil Nadu is between MDMK and AIADMK, with other parties like Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and Tamilga Vetrikazhagam (TVK) also in the fray.
