Kullu, July 11: Continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh is causing significant distress among residents. The threat of landslides and sudden floods looms over several areas, including Kullu and Shimla. Central Health Minister JP Nadda was scheduled to visit Spiti on Saturday, but he canceled his trip after reviewing weather-related warnings.
The heavy rainfall in Kullu has exposed flaws in the city’s sewage and drainage systems. Streets are flooded, creating safety hazards. Residents are expressing concerns about a dangerous situation reminiscent of last year’s landslides.
Asha Thakur, the chairperson of the Kullu Municipal Council, stated that continuous rainfall has led to visible cracks in several locations in Ward Number 2. She emphasized that it is no longer safe to reside there. The administration is providing tarpaulins for relief efforts.
Thakur urged residents to move to safer locations. “If anyone lacks shelter, we have arrangements at rain shelters and other places. Please come and stay safe,” she added.
Kubja Thakur, a councilor from Ward Number 2, reported that mud and stones have been falling in the area. Although some tarpaulins have been set up, she noted that this is not a safe solution. She appealed to the administration to address the situation and ensure a safe environment for the residents. “We have also communicated with MP Anurag Thakur, who mentioned that various works are underway, but they will take time,” she said.
Meanwhile, due to heavy rainfall in Spiti, the Central Health Minister’s visit has been postponed. BJP leader Ravi Thakur confirmed that JP Nadda was supposed to lay the foundation for the ICMR High-Altitude Medical and Public Health Research Center on July 11. However, the visit was canceled due to heavy rains and road damage in Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kullu. The ceremony is now expected to take place before September.
