Kolkata, July 11: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Alipur has issued a forecast indicating that Kolkata and several districts in South Bengal will experience continuous rainfall over the next four to five days. This suggests that the current spell of rain in the state is likely to extend further.
Since last Sunday (July 5), moderate to heavy rainfall has been occurring in Kolkata and various districts of South Bengal. According to the weather department, favorable conditions have intensified the monsoon winds, and an active low-pressure system is expected to bring significant rainfall in the coming days.
Habibur Rahman Biswas, the Eastern Regional Director of RMC, stated that a cyclonic circulation is present over the Ganges plains of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Additionally, the monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan to Mizoram in northeastern India. He noted that the low-pressure axis shifting northward will lead to increased rainfall intensity in Bengal. Due to adverse sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on Saturday and Sunday.
A yellow alert for rainfall has been issued for all districts in South Bengal. An orange alert has been declared for East Bardhaman, Nadia, and Bankura districts, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday.
Moreover, heavy rainfall is also expected in several districts, including Birbhum, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, and Howrah. Moderate rainfall is predicted for Kolkata on Saturday, with intermittent light to moderate showers expected over the next four to five days.
In northern Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in most upper districts on Saturday. A yellow alert has been issued for all these districts, while Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts are under an orange alert, warning of very heavy rainfall effective until Sunday.
According to the weather department’s data, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 28.6 degrees Celsius on Friday, which is 4.2 degrees Celsius below normal. The minimum temperature was 26.8 degrees Celsius, slightly below normal by 0.1 degrees Celsius. The city recorded a maximum relative humidity of 98 percent and a minimum of 95 percent.
