New Delhi, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : New Delhi experienced heavy rainfall on September 5, 2026, leading to significant waterlogging in various areas, disrupting traffic and daily life across the capital.
In Connaught Place, water accumulated near the Outer Circle, prompting authorities to deploy pumps to remove the excess water. Shopkeepers expressed concern as rainwater began to enter nearby stores.
Greater Noida and parts of Noida also faced heavy rainfall, while several areas within Delhi recorded substantial precipitation. Reports of waterlogging emerged near the roundabout at Mandir House, causing inconvenience for commuters and slowing down traffic.
Similar conditions were observed on the main road in Tughlakabad village, where standing water hindered vehicle movement. Intense rainfall continued throughout the day in many other parts of the capital.
The heavy downpour followed a stormy Friday, which had already disrupted the celebrations of Janmashtami, leaving many devotees struggling with the sudden weather change. On the afternoon of September 4, strong winds accompanied the rain, with wind speeds reaching nearly 50 km/h at Safdarjung and between 30 to 60 km/h at Palam.
From 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM on Friday, Palam recorded 75.6 mm of rain, while Safdarjung saw 32.6 mm, Lodhi Road reported 34.6 mm, and the Ridge area experienced 20 mm.
The adverse weather conditions also affected air traffic. Between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM on Friday, nine flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport had to change their routes due to the heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Several atmospheric systems are influencing the current weather in the region. A low-pressure area over northwestern Madhya Pradesh and southwestern Uttar Pradesh, along with the monsoon trough and other weather systems, are contributing to the rain and storms in Delhi-NCR.
Additionally, a trough extending from northeastern Rajasthan to Manipur and another from southern Gujarat to Jharkhand are impacting the area. A western disturbance is also present at upper atmospheric levels.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a significant reduction in rainfall activity is expected on Sunday, September 7, with light rain possible in some areas from morning to afternoon. Partial cloud cover is anticipated from September 7, with no significant rain forecasted.
