Heavy Rain Forecast for Western Tamil Nadu Over the Next Three Days

Chennai, May 23: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rainfall in the western and northern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Vellore, over the next three days.

According to the weather department, an atmospheric circulation is present over the southeastern Arabian Sea and surrounding areas, while a low-pressure area is active in Kerala and nearby southeastern regions. These weather systems are expected to bring rainfall to Tamil Nadu in the coming days.

The department has indicated that heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely in the districts of Nilgiri, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupathur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, scattered rain may occur in other districts, including Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, and Madurai on Saturday.

Forecasts for May 25 and 26 have also been issued, warning of heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, as well as in Nilgiri, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Madurai, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts.

Meanwhile, Chennai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies throughout the day. The weather department noted that despite the likelihood of scattered clouds, some areas of the city may still experience heatwave-like conditions.

Despite the forecast of rain in several districts, temperatures in Tamil Nadu remain consistently high. According to weather department data, 16 locations in the state recorded significantly high temperatures on Friday. Erode recorded the highest temperature at around 42 degrees Celsius, followed by Chennai-Meenambakkam at 41 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in Tiruttani, Vellore, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius.

In several other areas, including Chennai-Nungambakkam, Madurai Airport, Thanjavur, and Karur, temperatures hovered around 39 degrees Celsius, while extreme heat was also reported in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Palayamkottai, Parangipettai, and Thoothukudi.

This contrasting weather pattern of heavy rain warnings in some districts and rising temperatures in others reflects the complex climatic changes currently occurring in Tamil Nadu.
