Chennai, February 17: The Chennai-based Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning regarding heavy rainfall expected in at least 10 districts of Tamil Nadu on February 21. This forecast is attributed to a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal, which is gradually intensifying.
According to the weather department, the low-pressure system has developed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and the eastern Indian Ocean. Dry weather is anticipated across Tamil Nadu until February 18, after which a shift in weather patterns is expected.
On February 19, light to moderate rainfall is likely in the southern coastal districts and certain areas of the delta region. The system is expected to strengthen further on February 20, bringing moderate rain to various parts of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The weather department predicts heavy rainfall on February 21 in the delta districts of Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Pudukkottai. Additionally, there is a possibility of heavy rain in isolated areas of southern Tamil Nadu, including Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.
On February 22, heavy rain with thunder and lightning is forecasted for the districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
Fishermen are advised to exercise caution, especially in the southern coastal areas, as sea conditions may deteriorate depending on the system’s intensity. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow administrative directives. Officials are closely monitoring the situation.
