Patna, June 13: A recent downpour in Bihar has brought relief from the intense heat but has also highlighted severe infrastructural deficiencies at Sasaram’s largest government hospital.
On Saturday, a torrential rain lasting nearly an hour flooded the hospital premises, causing significant difficulties for patients, caregivers, doctors, and hospital staff.
Due to poor drainage, large sections of the hospital grounds—including the main road leading to the trauma center, the OPD building, the TB center, general wards, the blood bank, and the civil surgeon’s office—were submerged.
Local residents described the situation as resembling a pond, with accumulated rainwater creating hazardous conditions. Patients and their companions had to wade through knee-deep water to access medical facilities, struggling to keep their belongings and clothing dry while navigating the flooded corridors.
Reports indicate that healthcare workers and doctors faced considerable challenges moving between departments during the flooding.
Residents noted that this is not a new issue; severe waterlogging at the hospital has become a recurring problem every monsoon season. Locals claim that even light rain leads to water accumulation due to the lack of an effective drainage system.
Raju Kumar, a local resident, expressed concern over the hospital’s condition, emphasizing that it serves millions in the district. He urged the administration to find a permanent solution to the waterlogging issue.
Meanwhile, hospital manager Ajay Kumar Gupta acknowledged that the sudden heavy rain caused the flooding and stated that efforts are underway to remove the accumulated water. He also mentioned that the relevant department would be notified to implement preventive measures in the future.
This incident has reignited concerns regarding infrastructure management at critical public health institutions. With water still pooling in some areas of the hospital, patients and medical staff continue to face challenges, underscoring the urgent need for long-term drainage solutions and infrastructure improvements.
