Heavy Rain Disrupts Life in Dehradun, Schools Closed as Alert Issued

Dehradun, August 5: Heavy rainfall that began early Wednesday has severely impacted life across Uttarakhand. Continuous downpours have led to swollen rivers and seasonal streams in several districts, while the risk of landslides has increased in mountainous areas. Consequently, all schools and Anganwadi centers in Dehradun have been declared closed.

The rain has disrupted traffic on numerous routes, causing vehicles to slow down. Authorities are closely monitoring sensitive areas. With alerts from the meteorological department, disaster management and district administration teams are on high alert, keeping a watchful eye on the situation.

Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers and streams, and adhere to advisories issued by the meteorological department and local authorities.

In light of the heavy rainfall forecast, all schools from grades 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centers in Dehradun district have been given a day off. The district administration emphasized that adverse incidents could occur due to the heavy rains, prompting this precautionary measure.

A notice issued by District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan stated, “According to the current rainfall and updated forecasts from the meteorological department and NDMA, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Dehradun over the next 24 hours. There may also be lightning and intense rainfall during this period. An ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for the district.”

The notice further mentioned, “All government, non-government, and private schools for grades 1 to 12, along with all Anganwadi centers in Dehradun district, will remain closed today. The Chief Education Officer and District Program Officer of Dehradun have been instructed to ensure compliance with this order across all educational institutions and Anganwadi centers.”

Meanwhile, in response to the heavy rainfall situation, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed the disaster management secretary to remain on high alert. He instructed the SDRF, NDRF, and all district administrations to maintain vigilance and ensure prompt relief and rescue operations in case of emergencies.

Chief Minister Dhami appealed to all residents and tourists to exercise caution given the weather conditions, advising them to avoid unnecessary travel and only embark on journeys when absolutely necessary.
