Beijing, June 7: Torrential rain in Guizhou Province, southwestern China, has wreaked havoc, leading to severe flooding in several areas. As conditions worsened, approximately 10,000 individuals were evacuated to safety.
According to the Xinhua News Agency, the most affected regions include the cities of Qianxi, Junyi, and Changshun County.
In Qianxi, continuous heavy rainfall from Saturday night into early Sunday impacted all 30 townships in the city. Five of these townships recorded extreme rainfall. In response, local authorities initiated a 24-hour emergency relief and rescue operation.
So far, 1,377 people from 491 families have been relocated to safe areas, with over 50 individuals successfully rescued from dangerous situations.
In Changshun County, operations at the Bankong Reservoir were disrupted due to power supply issues, causing the reservoir to overflow. Consequently, around 3,000 individuals from approximately 1,000 families living in lower-lying villages were moved to safer locations.
By Sunday evening at 6 PM, China’s Ministry of Water Resources and the Meteorological Administration issued a top-level red alert for flash floods in the hilly regions of southeastern Guizhou. This warning is effective from 8 PM Sunday until 8 PM Monday.
