New Delhi, August 11: Heavy rainfall has been ongoing in various parts of Himachal Pradesh since Monday night. Particularly in Kangra district, intense rain has caused rivers and streams to swell. The Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts on Tuesday, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas.
Additionally, a yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Shimla, and Solan districts. According to the weather department, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several locations in Kangra and Sirmaur on Tuesday. Mandi district is also likely to experience similar conditions, while varying levels of heavy rain are anticipated in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Shimla, and Solan.
The heavy rainfall has increased the risk of landslides and debris flow in hilly and sensitive areas. Low-lying regions may experience waterlogging, and there is a possibility of sudden rises in water levels in rivers and streams, potentially leading to flash floods in some areas. The rain is expected to cause slippery conditions on mountain roads and reduced visibility, which may disrupt traffic.
The weather department has advised people to avoid sensitive areas prone to landslides, debris flow, and flash floods. Residents are urged to maintain a safe distance from rivers, streams, and other water bodies and to follow the directives issued by local authorities and the traffic department.
Forecasts indicate that light to moderate rain, with heavy rainfall in some areas, may continue in various parts of the state on August 12 and 13. Following that, heavy rainfall is expected to persist in different regions of Himachal from August 14 to 16.
Given the continuous rainfall, both the administration and local residents need to remain vigilant. They are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas, stay updated on weather conditions, and refrain from approaching rivers and streams.
In Uttarakhand, rainfall continues from the mountains to the plains. Heavy rain in Dehradun and Haridwar has disrupted daily life, with two buildings near a river collapsing in Dehradun.
In the mountainous regions, landslides are affecting traffic. The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in several districts of the state on Tuesday. On Monday, heavy rain caused a sudden surge in the Tamak stream, washing away a modular bridge. An alert for heavy rain has also been issued for Jammu and Ladakh for August 13. The weather department advises people to plan their outings and returns only after checking the weather updates.
