Heat Wave Hits Tamil Nadu, Rain and Storm Forecast for Coming Days

Chennai, April 21: Tamil Nadu is expected to experience a rise in temperatures over the next few days, particularly in its interior districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that temperatures in some areas may remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.

In Chennai, the temperature is likely to hover around 37 to 38 degrees Celsius. High humidity levels will also contribute to discomfort for residents.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast light to moderate rainfall in some districts of the Western Ghats, southern coastal regions, and delta districts over the next three days. Isolated areas may also experience thunderstorms, with winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h and possible lightning, providing some relief from the prevailing heat.

According to the IMD, these changing weather conditions are attributed to atmospheric disturbances in peninsular India, which are causing both rising temperatures and localized rainfall.

On Monday, the state recorded severe heat conditions, with at least 13 locations reporting temperatures above normal. Vellore recorded the highest temperature at approximately 40.5 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Karur, Erode, and Madurai Airport, where temperatures were around 40 degrees Celsius.

In Madurai city, the temperature was about 39.5 degrees Celsius, while Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, and Palayamkottai recorded temperatures near 39 degrees Celsius. Parts of Tirupattur, Salem, and Tirunelveli saw temperatures around 38.5 degrees Celsius, whereas Coimbatore recorded a relatively lower temperature of about 37.8 degrees Celsius.

The weather department has advised people to remain vigilant, especially during the afternoon. They recommend avoiding direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and exercising extra caution for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

The meteorological department is closely monitoring the changing weather patterns and urges both the public and local authorities to stay alert regarding heat-related risks and potential storm activities in the coming days.
