Surat, August 10: The suicide of a resident doctor at the Civil Hospital complex in Surat has caused a stir in the health department. Gujarat’s Health Minister, Prabhul Pansheriya, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. A committee has been formed to look into the matter, with a report expected within 24 hours.
The deceased has been identified as Dr. Harsh Pandya, originally from Modasa in the Aravalli district. He was residing in room 1005 of the boys’ PG hostel at the Surat Civil Hospital. According to police reports, he took his own life in his hostel room. A team from the Khatodara police arrived at the scene to begin their investigation.
Authorities are currently trying to determine the circumstances that led the resident doctor to take this drastic step. Police are gathering information from other students residing in the hostel.
Minister Pansheriya has taken the situation seriously and has instructed the formation of an investigation committee chaired by the superintendent and dean of the new civil hospital. He personally spoke to the doctor’s father, offering condolences and assuring him of a fair investigation and justice.
The investigation committee has been tasked with submitting a report within 24 hours. The direct monitoring of the investigation has been assigned to Director Sachdev Shri in Gandhinagar. All statements from students in the hostel are to be recorded by Monday night.
The investigation will specifically look into whether the resident doctor faced any incidents of ragging or if he had reported any mental distress or harassment. Committee members have been instructed to complete the investigation before returning home to ensure that all facts are brought to light as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, a forensic post-mortem of the doctor has been conducted. Police are advancing their investigation based on the post-mortem report and other evidence. The complete picture of the case will emerge once the investigation report is released.
