Kolkata, February 19: Kolkata police have arrested a suspect from Haryana in connection with an online fraud case. According to police reports, the accused executed cyber fraud using an APK file named ‘M Parivahan’.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Deepak Kumar, a resident of Jhajjar. He was apprehended on Wednesday after an investigation into a case involving over ₹500,000 in fraudulent activities.

The complaint was filed on September 12 of the previous year at the Kolkata police‘s cybercrime unit. The victim received a message stating that an e-challan had been issued in the name of their vehicle. A link was also provided for more information. When the victim clicked on the link, ₹60,000 was withdrawn from their account.

During the investigation, police traced the suspect through the server of the suspicious APK file and various IP addresses. This technical analysis led to the identification of Deepak Kumar. Subsequently, police issued him a notice and seized his mobile phone and SIM card.

According to police, the suspect failed to provide satisfactory responses to the first and fourth notices. He requested time to respond to the second and third notices. During questioning, his answers were found to be contradictory, leading to his arrest.

Police officials reported that complaints of cyber fraud are being filed daily in the city. To tackle the rising incidents, Kolkata police recently established seven new special units dedicated to investigating cyber crimes.
