New Delhi, March 24: Harish Rana, who was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the national capital, passed away on Tuesday. He was the first person in India to receive permission for passive euthanasia from the Supreme Court.
Harish had been in a coma for over 13 years, with no signs of improvement. Due to his prolonged dependence on life support, his family sought the court’s approval for euthanasia. In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court granted him the right to passive euthanasia.
On March 11, the Supreme Court delivered its verdict regarding Harish’s request for euthanasia. The bench, comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Vishwanathan, emphasized the need for the process to be carried out with complete dignity.
Justice Pardiwala expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is extremely sad. This is a difficult decision for us, but we cannot keep this young man (Harish) in such immense suffering. We have reached a stage where we must make the final decision.” The court praised Harish’s family for their unwavering support, noting that loving someone means caring for them even in the worst of times.
Harish, who was studying in Chandigarh, fell from the fourth floor of his hostel in 2013, resulting in severe head injuries. Since then, he had remained in a state of unconsciousness, developing bedsores from prolonged immobility. He required medical assistance for breathing, eating, and daily care.
