Habits That Invite Illness: Ayurveda’s Guide to Root Causes

New Delhi: Often, when the body falls ill, people tend to take medicines immediately without understanding the root cause of the illness. While medicines may provide temporary relief, the illness often returns after some time.

According to Ayurveda, it is essential not only to treat the disease but to eliminate its root cause. Once the root cause is identified and addressed, the illness can naturally disappear.

Ayurveda teaches that while external environmental factors can cause illness, the true root lies within the body. To understand this, Ayurveda divides the root causes into three categories. Recognising and correcting certain habits related to these causes can help one become free from diseases.

First Root: Pragyaparadha (Intellectual Error)
This involves knowingly engaging in activities that increase the risk of illness. Examples include eating even when not hungry, ignoring fatigue, frequently experiencing anger and anxiety, and neglecting proper sleep. These behaviours can weaken even a healthy body and serve as the primary cause of disease.

Second Root: Destruction of Agni (Digestive Fire)
The digestive fire not only helps in digestion but also acts as the body’s energy centre. Activities under Pragyaparadha negatively affect this digestive fire, causing food to rot inside instead of digesting properly. Consequently, despite eating nutritious food, the body receives incomplete nourishment, leading to the accumulation of toxins.

Third Root: Imbalance of Doshas
The body’s health depends on the balance of three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. When the digestive fire is weak and toxins accumulate, these doshas become imbalanced. This imbalance can lead to ailments related to digestion, respiratory system, bones, and muscles. Though medicines help in recovery, it remains crucial to identify and address these root causes to eliminate disease permanently.

Thus, alongside medicine, understanding and correcting harmful habits as per Ayurveda can lead to lasting health and prevent recurring illnesses.
