
Glasgow, July 29: Indian boxer Narendra has ensured a medal for the country at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He triumphed over Samoa’s Michael Seiko with a 3-2 split decision in the men’s 90 kg+ quarterfinals on Wednesday. This victory has propelled Narendra into the semifinals.
In a closely contested match, Narendra made a remarkable comeback after losing the first round on one judge’s scorecard. He maintained his composure and outperformed the heavyweight boxer from Samoa in the remaining rounds. Three out of five judges scored the bout 28-27 in favor of the Indian boxer, while the other two judges awarded Seiko a score of 28-27.
Narendra displayed courage and strength throughout the match. In a battle between two evenly matched boxers, he landed decisive punches at crucial moments, swaying most judges to his side.
With this victory, Narendra has reached the semifinals, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal under the Commonwealth Games boxing format, as both losing semifinalists receive bronze. His sights are now set on securing a spot in the finals and winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Narendra becomes the eighth Indian boxer to reach the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Previously, boxers Preeti, Priya, Jadumani Singh, Sakshi, Arundhati Chaudhary, Sachin Siwach, and Ankush also secured their places in the semifinals in their respective weight categories.
In the women’s 60 kg quarterfinals, Priya defeated Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell 4-1, while Preeti won against Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde 5-0 in the 54 kg category. In the men’s 55 kg quarterfinals, Sachin Siwach secured his semifinal spot by defeating Mwale Mwengo 5-0.
Earlier on Wednesday, Sakshi and Arundhati ensured medals for India in their weight categories. In the women’s 51 kg quarterfinals, Sakshi won against Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers 5-0, while Arundhati Chaudhary defeated New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson 3-1. In the men’s 60 kg category, Sachin Siwach also won decisively against Botswana’s Treasure Moremi, with a score of 5-0.
