Gulveer Singh Makes History at CWG 2026 with Bronze in 5,000m

Glasgow, August 2: Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh made history late Saturday night (Indian time) by winning a bronze medal in the men’s 5,000 meters final at the Commonwealth Games. With this achievement, Gulveer became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Commonwealth Games.

Earlier, Gulveer Singh secured a silver medal in the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 27:49.78, marking a historic accomplishment for the country at the Commonwealth Games.

Gulveer clocked 13:24.95 seconds to finish third, while Kenya’s Matthew Kipchumba Kipsang took gold with a time of 13:23.61 seconds. Australia’s Kai Robinson claimed the silver medal with a time of 13:24.70 seconds.

At the Scotstoun Stadium, Gulveer completed the first 400 meters in 1:10.6 seconds, placing him in eighth position. He then improved his pace, finishing the next 400 meters in 1:06.4 seconds, moving up to fourth place. He maintained his momentum, completing the next two laps in 32.9 seconds and 34.1 seconds, respectively.

The 28-year-old army man from Atrauli, Uttar Pradesh, completed the initial 3,000 meters in 8:16.6 seconds, holding fifth place at that point. By 4,800 meters, he had climbed to third place, maintaining that position to secure the silver medal for India.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Matthew Kipchumba Kipsang started the first 400 meters in 1:11.0 seconds, placing him in 15th position initially. He progressed to complete the 3,000 meters in 9th place with a time of 8:16.8 seconds. By 4,800 meters, Kipsang had taken the lead and maintained it to claim the title.

On the other hand, Australia’s Kai Robinson led the first 400 meters with a time of 1:10.2 seconds. He was in seventh place by the time he completed 3,000 meters in 8:16.7 seconds. Robinson regained the lead by 4,500 meters but lost it after 4,700 meters, ultimately finishing second to secure the silver medal.

India has now won a total of 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Currently, India stands fourth in the medal tally.
