Surat, July 11: The Gujarat government has heightened its vigilance in response to cases of the Chandipura virus. State Minister Praful Panseriya reported on Saturday that 17 suspected cases have been identified among children, with tests conducted on each. Of these, 10 children’s results came back negative, while six were confirmed to be infected with the Chandipura virus. All infected children are currently receiving treatment.
The minister stated, “In the past 10 days, three children have died due to the Chandipura virus. Additionally, one child is hospitalized in Vadnagar, and their condition is currently stable. The health department is closely monitoring all patients and providing them with quality medical care.”
Panseriya emphasized that the state government is taking this illness seriously. In 2024, an outbreak of the Chandipura virus was reported in 61 villages across Gujarat. At that time, the health department conducted extensive surveys in affected areas, sprayed medication, and implemented several precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the infection.
He also mentioned, “This time, the health department has instructed all hospitals to conduct immediate tests if any child exhibits symptoms similar to those of the Chandipura virus. Timely testing and treatment can effectively control the disease.”
The minister urged the public, “There is no need to panic about this virus, but it is crucial to remain vigilant. The state government’s health teams are monitoring the situation in villages and keeping a close watch on potentially infected areas.”
He expressed hope that the treatment for the six infected children would be successful and that they would return home healthy soon.
Panseriya explained that the spread of the Chandipura virus is associated with a small fly known as the ‘sand fly.’ This fly typically thrives in raw homes, soil, and cracks in walls. In light of this, the health department is spraying insecticides in affected areas and advising residents to maintain cleanliness and prevent dirt and moisture around their homes.
