
Vadodara: Gujarat Giants secured a thrilling three-run victory over Delhi Capitals in the 17th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 held at the BCA Stadium. This win keeps the Giants’ playoff hopes alive as they move up the points table.
With this win, Gujarat Giants have won four out of seven matches and currently hold the second spot on the points table. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals have lost four out of seven games and stand at fourth position.
After losing the toss, Gujarat Giants opted to bat first and posted a total of 174 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Early in the innings, Sophie Devine was dismissed after scoring 13 runs. Beth Mooney then joined Anushka Sharma and together they added 54 runs off 39 balls to strengthen the innings. Anushka contributed 39 runs from 25 balls, including eight boundaries.
Following two wickets, Beth Mooney built crucial partnerships of 23 runs with captain Ashley Gardner and 32 runs with Georgia Wareham, taking the team’s score to 128. Mooney scored 58 runs off 46 balls with seven fours before getting out. In the lower order, Tanuja played a quick cameo of 21 runs off 11 balls, hitting four boundaries. From the Delhi Capitals bowling attack, Shree Charani took four wickets conceding 31 runs, while Chinelle Henry claimed two wickets.
In response, Delhi Capitals managed 171 runs for eight wickets in their allotted overs. Openers Shefali Verma and Lizelle Lee provided a solid start, putting on 26 runs in 2.2 overs. Shefali scored 14 runs from 10 balls with three fours before getting out. Lizelle added 11 runs off 20 balls and was dismissed soon after. Captain Jemimah Rodrigues came in at number four and, along with Laura Wolvaardt, stitched a 31-run partnership, taking the score to 82 for three.
After Laura’s dismissal, Delhi Capitals struggled under pressure, losing six wickets by the time they reached 100 runs. However, Niki Prasad and Sneh Rana revived the innings with a 70-run stand off 31 balls, bringing the Capitals close to victory. Delhi scored 20 runs in the 19th over, but needed nine runs off the final over.
On the fourth ball of the last over, Sneh Rana was dismissed after scoring 29 runs. The final delivery required a boundary for Delhi to win, but Niki Prasad’s catch was taken by Georgia Wareham, sealing the victory for Gujarat Giants in a nail-biting finish.
Sophie Devine was the standout bowler for Gujarat Giants, taking four wickets for 37 runs. Rajeshwari Gayakwad claimed three wickets, while Ashley Gardner took one wicket.
