Surat, July 21: A Range Forest Officer (RFO) tragically lost his life in a road accident while chasing wood smugglers in the Tapi district of Gujarat. Following this incident, the state government has vowed to investigate the matter and maintain a zero-tolerance policy against crimes related to forest resources.
The officer, Vikas Desai, was on duty in the Tapi range when the accident occurred. Reports indicate that he was pursuing suspected smugglers transporting illegally cut acacia wood.
According to the state government, Desai received information that the smugglers were fleeing with valuable acacia wood. Upon receiving the alert, he took immediate action but unfortunately fell victim to a fatal road accident during the chase.
Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia paid tribute to Desai, stating that his death represents an irreparable loss for the forest department. He also expressed condolences to the grieving family.
Modhwadia remarked, “As long as forest culture thrives, human civilization will remain safe. The sacrifice of RFO Vikas Desai for this noble cause will never be forgotten.”
He emphasized that Desai acted with unwavering dedication and a sense of responsibility upon receiving the report of timber theft. His life will continue to inspire the entire forest community.
The minister noted that the work of the forest department is not merely an administrative duty but a sacred responsibility to protect nature, the environment, and the future of coming generations.
He added that Gujarat’s forests, wildlife, and natural resources are secure due to the commitment of dedicated officials.
Modhwadia also extended tributes to Desai on behalf of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government, and the forest department, praying for strength for the family to endure this loss.
The minister announced a detailed investigation into the incident, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against illegal activities that harm forest resources, with strict action against offenders.
Vikas Desai hailed from Bhatser village in the Chanasma taluka of Patan district. He was the third among four siblings. Before joining the forest department, he served as a Deputy Section Officer in the Secretariat. He had begun his service in the forest department about three years ago.
Desai is survived by his parents, wife, and a five-year-old son. Forest State Minister Praveen Mali also expressed condolences to the family.
Several senior officials from the forest department, including Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Dr. Jaipal Singh, visited the family to convey their sympathies.
