Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested a 22-year-old man from Navsari district on Tuesday, uncovering substantial evidence of a planned terrorist conspiracy.
The accused has been identified as Faizan Sheikh, a resident of Dundawala village in Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh. He had been living in Jarkavad area of Navsari for the past four years, working as a tailor.
Based on intelligence inputs regarding preparations for violent acts, the ATS conducted a joint operation with Navsari Police and apprehended the suspect.
According to ATS officials, secret information revealed that Faizan Sheikh had conspired to target and kill selected individuals to spread terror. He was also involved in activities promoting jihadist and separatist ideologies.
During technical scrutiny and investigation, authorities identified a suspicious Instagram account allegedly operated by the accused, leading to his arrest.
An ATS officer stated that digital examination of the accused’s mobile phone uncovered a large amount of extremist content supporting banned terror groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Al-Qaeda.
Additionally, photos of several individuals marked as potential targets were recovered.
The officers also seized 29 pages written in Arabic and Urdu, which according to ATS, aimed to mislead youth by connecting them with extremist ideology.
During the operation, a pistol and six live cartridges were recovered from the accused.
Faizan Sheikh reportedly revealed that he purchased the weapon and ammunition about six months ago from an unidentified person in Uttar Pradesh.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsh Upadhyay said that the identification of the targeted individuals is currently underway. The technical analysis is expected to be completed within two to three days.
