Surat, August 1: In a groundbreaking event, Surat’s New Civil Hospital has successfully completed its 96th organ donation. Mithun Swain, a 36-year-old worker from Odisha, donated his kidneys, liver, and heart, giving four individuals a new lease on life.
Remarkably, this organ donation marked the first instance in India where a heart was transported via the Vande Bharat Express train for transplantation. The heart was delivered from Surat to Ahmedabad in approximately 217 minutes (3.45 hours).
Mithun, who resided in Kalakhadi, Ganjam district of Odisha, collapsed on July 28 while sitting on the floor. His condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his transfer to a local private hospital. Due to the severity of his condition, he was quickly transported to Surat Civil Hospital via an ambulance.
On July 30, at 4:01 PM, a team of doctors, including RMO Dr. Ketan Nayak, plastic surgeon Dr. Nilesh Kachhadiya, neurologist Dr. Prayag Makwana, and neurosurgeon Dr. Keyur Prajapati, declared him brain dead. Following this, volunteers from the organ donation charitable trust, including Iqbal Kadiwala and counselor Nirmala Kathude, explained the significance of organ donation to Mithun’s wife and family.
With a heavy heart, the family agreed to donate his organs, motivated by the desire to give others a second chance at life and to encourage organ donation in their village. At 5:00 AM, Medical Superintendent Dr. Parul Vadgama and Medical Officer Dr. Solanki oversaw the process.
The trust’s Iqbal Kadiwala, along with doctors and staff, participated in a prayer meeting for the peace of Mithun’s soul. His liver and both kidneys were sent to IKDRC Hospital, while his heart was transported via the Vande Bharat train to UN Mehta Hospital in Ahmedabad.
Dilip Dada Deshmukh, founder of the organ donation charitable trust, played a vital role in promoting this inspiring campaign. Under the guidance of Dr. Parul Vadgama, the medical staff, security personnel, railway police, social workers, and volunteers all contributed significantly to this organ donation process.
