Govt to Decide Pakistan’s Participation in T20 World Cup: Mohsin Naqvi

Mumbai, 24 January – The International Cricket Council (ICC) has replaced Bangladesh with Scotland in the T20 World Cup 2026 after Bangladesh refused to play matches in India. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reached out to the Government regarding Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming World Cup, showing solidarity with Bangladesh.

According to a report by Telecom Asia Sport, PCB Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that the decision on Pakistan’s involvement in the T20 World Cup will depend entirely on the Government’s approval.

Speaking from Lahore on Saturday, Naqvi said, “Whether we play in the T20 World Cup or not is a decision for the Government. Our Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is currently abroad. When he returns, we will consult him. The Government’s decision will be final and binding. If the PM declines, then ICC may invite another team in our place.”

Naqvi also mentioned that the PCB has alternative plans in place. “We have Plan A, B, and C that we can use when needed. We followed a similar approach during the Champions Trophy before, so this is not new for us. We know how to handle such situations,” he added.

Criticising ICC’s approach, Naqvi accused the council of favouring one country. “One country is calling the shots. When ICC changed venues for Pakistan and India, why was no similar arrangement made for Bangladesh?”

Targeting the perceived injustice towards Bangladesh, he said, “Bangladesh is a major stakeholder. They have been treated unfairly in this matter. I raised this in Wednesday’s meeting as well, and there are several reasons behind their stance which I will explain at the right time.”

On Saturday evening, ICC confirmed that Scotland will participate in the T20 World Cup 2026 in place of Bangladesh. Scotland will join Group C, which includes Italy, Nepal, England, and West Indies. Scotland is the highest-ranked team that had not initially qualified for the tournament.
