Mumbai, May 5: West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi visited the renowned Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata on Tuesday, accompanied by his wife, Lakshmi Ravi. During this visit, he offered prayers to Goddess Kali, expressing his hopes for the welfare, progress, and prosperity of the state’s residents.
The official ‘X’ handle of Lok Bhavan, West Bengal’s government, shared details of this visit, highlighting the significance of the governor’s religious engagement.
Kalighat Kali Temple is not only one of the prominent religious sites in West Bengal but also across the country. It is recognized as one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peeths. According to tradition, the right toe of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen here, making this location highly revered. The Kali Puja held at Kalighat holds special religious importance, attracting a large number of devotees each year.
Historically and culturally, the Kalighat Temple has played a crucial role. It is believed that the name ‘Kolkata’ originated from ‘Kalighat.’ The temple has been a significant center for tantric practices in Eastern India and has inspired Bengal’s art, literature, and traditional Pat Chitra (scroll painting) for centuries.
