Mumbai, April 27: Google is making significant updates to YouTube TV, its exclusive live broadcast service in the US. Users may already be familiar with the Multiview feature, which allows them to watch two, three, or even four channels simultaneously. This feature is particularly useful during busy sports seasons when fans want to keep track of multiple games at once.
Previously, Google offered a “suggested” Multiview setup, automatically curated for users. However, the company has now introduced a fully customizable version, enabling users to select their preferred streams. While it’s unclear why this option wasn’t available initially, technical constraints related to the transmission and playback of multiple streams may have played a role. The good news is that this feature is now available and is being rolled out server-side, meaning users can expect to see it on their devices soon.
In addition to the Multiview update, Google is also testing a new ad format for YouTube live streams. Users watching live content on TV or desktop may have noticed “side-by-side” ads appearing at the bottom of the screen. These ads do not interrupt the stream; instead, they mute the audio during the advertisement. This approach allows viewers to stay engaged with the content, although it may not be ideal in all situations.
Google is expanding this “side-by-side” ad format to mobile devices as well, providing another avenue for monetization while keeping viewers connected to the live action.
