Global Voices Unite to Safeguard Indian Democracy in Joint Statement
Over 400 Indian scholars abroad express concern over threats to Indias democratic institutions in a joint statement.

New Delhi, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : More than 400 Indian-origin students, researchers, and alumni from 27 countries have issued a joint statement titled “Spare India from Anarchy.” This declaration expresses alarm over efforts to undermine democratic and constitutional institutions in India and the increasing reliance on street movements to weaken democratic processes.
The statement highlights that Indian democracy has repeatedly demonstrated its strength and stability since independence. It notes the continuous fortification of constitutional institutions, effective checks and balances, and the peaceful transfer of power as hallmarks of Indian democracy.
The signatories raised concerns about a rising trend among certain groups to reject electoral outcomes, question constitutional institutions, and prefer street protests over parliamentary discourse. They pointed out that the credibility of electoral processes is often challenged following unfavorable election results, while the independence of the judiciary is questioned after adverse court rulings.
Moreover, the statement asserts that even the armed forces, traditionally viewed as a non-political entity, are being inappropriately dragged into political discussions. The students and scholars accused some factions of attempting to sow doubt about Indian democracy and its institutions under the guise of protecting democracy. They noted that pending judicial matters are being politically exploited, and there are efforts to weaken the constitutional framework through anarchist forces.
Expressing their concern, the signatories emphasized their connection to the Indian identity and the future of India. They referenced Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, who warned that constitutional methods must be adopted to maintain India as a constitutional republic and to avoid chaos.
The statement acknowledged that dissent is a vital component of democracy, but efforts to undermine democratic institutions in the name of democracy cannot be condoned. The joint statement called upon all social and political forces to resolve differences through dialogue, debate, and constitutional means.
The students and scholars urged India to present a positive example to the world’s democratic nations for the right reasons. They expressed hope that all parties would adopt a prudent approach and work towards strengthening democratic values.
The statement has been endorsed by individuals associated with prestigious educational institutions, including MIT, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Princeton University, Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, Columbia University, the London School of Economics, the National University of Singapore, Seoul National University, the University of Manchester, and the University of Toronto, among others. In total, 402 students have agreed to this statement.
