Seoul, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The global semiconductor market is expected to exceed $1.6 trillion by 2026, fueled by increasing investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This projection is more than 1.5 times the estimates made earlier this year, according to a recent report.
As reported by Yonhap News Agency, this forecast comes amid concerns regarding the rapid pace of AI development, with calls for more control over certain aspects of the technology.
The report indicates that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are anticipated to capture over half of the global semiconductor market share, driven by the growing volume of data processed by AI systems.
Prepared by the Korea Export-Import Bank’s research center, the report draws on analyses from global market research firms, including TrendForce. Previously, it was estimated that the global semiconductor market would not surpass the $1 trillion mark until 2030. However, significant investments in AI infrastructure by major American and Chinese hyperscale companies have dramatically revised this outlook.
By the end of last month, prices for Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and NAND flash memory chips had reached $25 and $30.50, respectively, representing increases of 4.4 times and 9 times compared to a year earlier.
The latest projections suggest that memory chip prices will stabilize next year. Nevertheless, strong demand is expected to continue driving growth in the global semiconductor market, with estimates suggesting it could approach $2 trillion by 2030.
The report states, “Major tech companies are forming long-term supply agreements with memory chip manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. This will help stabilize the semiconductor industry compared to previous times.”
Industry sources indicate that the rapid expansion of AI investments and services by major tech firms will likely keep the momentum in the memory chip market strong in the near future.
