The Significance of Buying Brooms on Dhanteras: A Spiritual Perspective

Discover the spiritual significance of purchasing brooms on Dhanteras, a festival symbolizing wealth and prosperity.

New Delhi, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : Dhanteras, celebrated on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik, symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and health. Traditionally, it is a day marked by the purchase of gold, silver, utensils, vehicles, and property. However, one item stands out as particularly auspicious: the broom.

Though it may seem ordinary, the broom holds a special place in Hinduism. The significance of buying a broom on this sacred festival is deeply rooted in religious and spiritual beliefs.

Purchasing a broom on Dhanteras is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that a clean and tidy home is where Goddess Lakshmi resides permanently. The broom is seen as a symbol of the goddess, as it sweeps away dirt and negativity, along with poverty. Bringing a new broom into the home on this day is thought to usher in happiness, peace, and positive energy.

It is said that in homes blessed by Goddess Lakshmi, sorrow and poverty cannot dwell. For those facing financial challenges or debt, buying a broom and performing a small worship ritual on Dhanteras is recommended. The act is believed to alleviate financial burdens and invite prosperity. In many households, a white thread is tied around the new broom during this occasion.

Traditionally, it is advised to keep the broom hidden in a corner of the house, away from the eyes of outsiders. According to astrology and Vastu Shastra, the broom is regarded as an embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi. Displaying it openly or near the main entrance is considered disrespectful to the goddess, as it draws unwanted attention.

Keeping the broom out of sight helps maintain a balance of positive energy in the home and prevents financial obstacles. Vastu Shastra recommends storing the broom in the southwest or northwest direction as the most auspicious. It should never be placed in the northeast or near the temple/kitchen. Many traditions suggest that brooms should always be bought in even numbers, typically one or in pairs, on Dhanteras.

This unique ritual highlights the cultural and spiritual dimensions of Dhanteras, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and positivity in attracting wealth and prosperity.
