Anu Malik Reflects on His Struggles and Success in Bollywood Music

Anu Malik shares his journey from struggles to success in Bollywood, recalling his early days and a heartfelt gift to his father.

Mumbai, November 4 (Daily Kiran) : MUMBAI — Renowned composer Anu Malik recently reminisced about his rise in the Hindi film music industry, highlighting a touching moment when he gifted his father, Sardar Malik, a car. A clip of his conversation with lyricist Sameer has gone viral, where Malik reflects on his early struggles amid the dominance of legendary composers like R.D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

In the clip, Malik recalls, “During those days, R.D. Burman was the top composer, and we all held him in high regard. Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal ruled the scene. Getting a song recorded with them was a significant achievement. Studios like Mehboob, Film Centre, and Famous were always booked, making it hard to find films, musicians, or even singers. It was difficult to get dates from legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Kishore Kumar.”

Malik mentioned how he often stood outside Mehboob Studios for hours without gaining entry. He would approach producers, saying, “Sir, please listen to my song.”

He humorously recounted a famous story: “I got my first film when I played my song for a director in the bathroom. Yes, I did that because there was no one to listen or ask about my work. I couldn’t bear to see my father’s disappointment. Once producers started noticing me, things began to change.”

As his career took off, Malik was able to give his father a special gift. “When my work started to flourish, I saw my dad waiting at a bus stop. I gifted him a car and said, ‘Dad, from today, the driver and car are yours.’”

This heartfelt gesture marked a significant milestone in Malik’s journey, showcasing the deep bond between him and his father, as well as his determination to succeed against the odds.
