Kolkata, April 20: The verbal clash between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified in West Bengal. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani referenced the BJP’s manifesto, asserting that if the party comes to power, it will fulfill its promises. She made it clear that there should be no confusion regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Bengal once the BJP is in charge.
In a conversation, Irani criticized the TMC government for its failure in maintaining law and order. She pointed out that Bengal is the only state where judicial officers have been held hostage. “Is there any need for me to comment on this? In the last decade, have you seen any other state where judicial officers are held hostage, with the President of India present, and the administration shows them disrespect?” she questioned.
Regarding the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, Irani stated that it was not meant for the TMC but for ordinary Indian women seeking political rights and legislative equality, as enshrined in the Constitution. “This bill is not for them; it is for the country. It is for the common Indian woman. The Indian Parliament does not serve TMC’s interests but those of the people of India,” she emphasized.
During a press conference on women’s reservation, Irani took a jab at TMC leader Mamata Banerjee. She accused the TMC of betraying the women of Bengal and the nation. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to end a 30-year struggle and passed the Women’s Reservation Act in both houses of Parliament in 2023. He spoke about ensuring women’s candidacy in upcoming elections, but the opposition did not want to see an increase in women’s political participation,” she remarked.
Irani urged all opposition parties to support the initiative. “We believed that no political party or leader would dare to betray the nation’s women, yet the opposition stood against women’s reservation,” she stated.
She concluded by asserting that BJP workers aim to provide women with political respect and opportunities to become politicians, while the TMC is playing a role against implementing women’s reservation. “The women of Bengal and the country will remember this,” she added.
