From Spice Seller to Entrepreneur: Manjulas Journey in Bihar

Patna, March 26: Manjula Kumari, a resident of Sarichak village in Bihar’s Silav block, has become an inspiring figure for local women. Initially grinding turmeric on a small scale for local markets, she has now established a spice industry named “Sarichak Enterprises” with the support of the PM-FME (Prime Minister’s Micro Food Industry Upgradation) scheme. This venture has created jobs for over 30 individuals, showcasing a new narrative of self-reliance in her community.

Manjula emphasizes quality and purity, setting her products apart from common spices available in the market. Her unit is equipped with specialized machines for grinding turmeric, chili, coriander, and various spices. Today, her pure spices are not only popular in local villages but also reach renowned hotels and malls in Rajgir.

In an interview, Manjula shared that she previously struggled to meet the demand for her turmeric business. Through the Livelihood program, she learned about the PM-FME scheme and applied with the ambition to expand her business. She secured a loan of ₹721,000 from Canara Bank in Badgaon, combining it with her savings to invest nearly ₹1 million in her unit.

She explained, “While most people grind all spices in one machine, our turmeric machine is unique. It processes only turmeric to ensure 100% purity for our customers. We produce both whole and ground spices, including turmeric, chili, coriander, cumin, and various hot and vegetable spices.”

Initially facing challenges in selling her products, Manjula devised an effective strategy. She employed women from her community to gather demand and manage supply in every village. Currently, 30 individuals are involved in distribution, while three staff members handle grinding and packaging at her home. Her spices are now supplied not only in Silav block but also to two schools, several major hotels in Rajgir, and recently opened malls.

Excited about her success, Manjula expresses her gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She mentions receiving a subsidy of approximately ₹250,000 under the scheme. As a big admirer of PM Modi, she shares, “My only wish is to meet the Prime Minister at least once in my life.”
