New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed all government and private schools across the country to provide free sanitary pads to girls studying in classes 6 to 12. This ruling comes after hearing a public interest petition concerning menstrual hygiene.
The court emphasized that access to free sanitary pads is not merely a facility but a fundamental right of the students. It instructed schools to ensure a safe, clean, and dignified environment for girls. Additionally, schools must have separate toilets for different genders with full privacy, and special provisions should be made for students with disabilities.
The Supreme Court also ordered that biodegradable sanitary pads be made available inside school toilets. These pads should be distributed either through vending machines or by designated school authorities to avoid any discomfort or hesitation among the girls.
Furthermore, the court mandated the establishment of ‘Menstrual Hygiene Management Corners’ in all schools. These corners will provide essential products and information related to menstrual health, helping girls feel safe and informed.
All states and union territories have been asked to submit a report within three months detailing the implementation of these directives. The court has also instructed the central government to formulate a national policy to ensure uniformity in the system across the country.
The petition was filed by social activist Jaya Thakur from Madhya Pradesh, who demanded free sanitary pads and other menstrual products in schools to prevent any girl’s education from being disrupted due to menstruation.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court also directed states and union territories to share information regarding their existing menstrual hygiene programs and funded policies with the central government.
