Four Schoolchildren Found Dead in Tamil Nadu Lake

Four missing schoolchildren were discovered dead in a lake near Chennai, raising concerns about their circumstances.

Chennai, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Four schoolchildren who went missing on Saturday were tragically found dead in Thiruneermalai Lake near Chennai on Sunday. The victims included two boys and two girls, all residents of Krishna Street in Lakshmipuram, Chromepet.

Authorities have identified the children as K. Devadarshan, 12, D. Yuvnesh, 10, and two 13-year-old girls, Pooja and Khushi. Devadarshan was a seventh grader at a government school, while Pooja and Khushi were in eighth grade at the same institution. Yuvnesh attended a private school and was in sixth grade.

According to police reports, the children were last seen playing together near their homes on Saturday afternoon. After they failed to return, their families initiated a search, contacting relatives and friends for assistance. They shared the children’s photographs in local WhatsApp groups, urging residents to provide any information about their whereabouts.

As the search yielded no leads and night fell without any sign of the children, the parents of the two boys filed a missing persons report at the Chromepet police station. The police alerted personnel at Tambaram, Egmore, and Chennai Central railway stations, as well as the Kelambakkam bus terminal, to check if the children had left the area.

The situation turned tragic on Sunday when visitors to Thiruneermalai Periya Eri Lake spotted four bodies floating in the water and alerted authorities. Police and personnel from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services arrived at the scene to retrieve the bodies.

The remains were brought to shore, where family members confirmed their identities. The bodies have since been sent to the mortuary at Tambaram District Government Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Investigators are working to determine how the children ended up in the lake and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Authorities suspect that the children may have gotten stuck in mud and drowned, although the exact causes of death remain unclear. The police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
