Former TMC Councillor Arrested for Assaulting Pregnant Woman in Kolkata

Kolkata, July 11: Anjan Das, a former councillor of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) from Ward 129 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, has been arrested along with his associate Bhola Sarkar. They face allegations of assaulting a pregnant woman, issuing death threats, and harassment, as confirmed by police on Saturday.

According to the complaint filed by Vijaya Ghosh, her family has been repeatedly attacked and threatened due to political rivalry, stemming from their support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020. She claims that despite being pregnant, Anjan Das kicked her in the abdomen and threatened her family at their home.

Vijaya Ghosh stated that following these incidents, her family experienced severe mental distress. She also mentioned that her father-in-law attempted suicide due to the mental harassment they endured.

After a change in government in the state, Vijaya Ghosh recently lodged a written complaint at the Paranshree police station. Based on her complaint, the police initiated an investigation, leading to the arrest of Anjan Das and Bhola Sarkar on Saturday.

Following their arrest, Anjan Das was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital for a medical examination. Outside the hospital, local residents, along with BJP workers and supporters, surrounded the police vehicle, chanting “thief, thief.” However, police from the Paranshree station intervened promptly to manage the situation.

The complainant has demanded strict and exemplary punishment for the accused, emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents in the future.

It is noteworthy that since the change in state government, over a dozen former TMC councillors in Kolkata have been arrested for extortion, criminal threats, harassment, and other offenses. Similar actions have been taken against several TMC councillors and leaders across various parts of the state.
