Washington, April 29: A federal grand jury in the United States has filed charges against former FBI Director James Comey. He is accused of threatening to harm President Donald Trump.
The indictment was submitted in the Eastern District of North Carolina. It alleges that on May 15, 2025, Comey intentionally threatened to kill the president and cause him physical harm. He is also charged with sending a threatening message across state lines.
According to prosecutors, this case is linked to an Instagram post that featured seashells arranged as “86 47.” Officials claim that anyone familiar with the context could interpret this as an intent to harm the president.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch stated that the case was filed after months of investigation. He emphasized, “Threatening the life of the American president is a serious violation of our laws. There is a need to calm the atmosphere, and anyone who incites violence and threatens the president will be held accountable.”
Blanch noted that the case has been developed over time. He added, “This investigation did not just begin. It is the result of extensive work by law enforcement agencies over the past year.” He further mentioned that such cases often require examining devices, conversations, and legal safeguards.
FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that the investigation followed standard procedures. He stated that the FBI and the Justice Department approach every case with equal seriousness and resources. According to him, Comey allegedly threatened the president.
Patel revealed that the post was later deleted. He noted that Comey removed it shortly after posting and issued an apology.
U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle remarked that the law applies equally to everyone. He stated that regardless of one’s position, if they break the law, they will face consequences.
Comey faces federal charges under laws that classify threatening the president and sending threats across state lines as crimes. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Officials declined to elaborate on the evidence. Blanch mentioned that the intent will be proven through “witnesses, documents, and the defendant himself, as far as it is appropriate.”
He added that this case will proceed in court like any other. He explained that a date for the arraignment will be set, similar to hundreds of other cases that arise each year.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely a charge. Comey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. Threatening the president is a serious offense in the U.S., and there have been numerous prosecutions in recent years due to the rising number of threats against public officials.
