Kolkata, July 22: Political tensions have escalated in West Bengal regarding the events of July 21. Following Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari‘s announcement to reopen files related to the incident, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul launched a sharp attack on former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). She claimed that Banerjee no longer holds any moral authority to organize events on July 21. A fair investigation into the matter is expected to reveal numerous facts.
In an exclusive interview, Agnimitra Paul stated that Mamata Banerjee has not addressed the issue during the July 21 events. She is aware of her weakened moral standing regarding this incident. It remains perplexing why the TMC continues to hold annual events on this date.
Paul also mentioned recent controversies surrounding the removal of party flags and other related issues. It is crucial to investigate who was behind these events, especially as multiple factions within the TMC are becoming increasingly active and competitive.
She accused Suvendu Adhikari of exposing a report related to July 21 in the Assembly. The report revealed that families of the deceased were recommended compensation of 2.5 million rupees, while the injured were to receive 500,000 rupees. However, the state government failed to implement these recommendations. Paul asserted that the families received only 200,000 rupees instead of the promised amount, and similarly, the injured received significantly less than what was due. The previous government treated victims from various circumstances equally, resulting in injustice for the affected families.
Furthermore, she claimed that the commission’s report related to the investigation, which was funded by public money, has not been made public. Had the report been released, it would have shed light on the roles of various officials and the previous administration. Instead of facing consequences, those questioned were later assigned significant responsibilities. If the files are reopened now, many truths will emerge, revealing the reality to the public.
Agnimitra Paul emphasized that for years, political events have been held in the name of July 21, playing with the emotions of the people of Bengal. She accused the authorities of failing to deliver justice to families who lost loved ones, while the culprits were shielded rather than prosecuted. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has also stated that efforts will be made to ensure justice for families who have not yet received their due compensation. Paul demanded that the former Chief Minister respond to the entire situation, asserting that a renewed investigation could answer many lingering questions related to July 21.
