Islamabad, March 23: A fire erupted once again in the basement of Gul Plaza in Karachi on Sunday. This is the same location where a tragic incident occurred two months ago, resulting in the deaths of over 70 people.
Pakistani authorities suspect that the cause of the recent fire may be linked to drug addicts attempting to steal copper from the site.
Following the incident, Amir Fazal Owaisi, the acting Deputy Commissioner of South Karachi, stated that the fire was likely caused by these individuals, although an investigation is ongoing.
According to reports from the Express Tribune, police and fire brigade teams discovered several people inside the building when they arrived, who were allegedly there to steal wires and other materials.
Reports indicate that one individual was found unconscious in the basement.
The Nabi Baksh police reported that the injured person, a known drug addict, had entered Gul Plaza with accomplices with the intention of stealing.
Authorities believe that the suspects attempted to burn the wires in the debris to extract copper, which led to the fire igniting.
The injured individual became trapped in the blaze, while his companions managed to escape. He was bleeding from his ears and nose and has been taken to a civil hospital for treatment.
Recently, Tanveer Pasta, the chairman of the Gul Plaza Mall management committee, informed the judicial commission investigating the severe fire that occurred on January 17 that rescue services arrived late and failed to evacuate people trapped inside during the critical early hours of the fire.
He made these statements in response to questions posed by a single-judge commission led by Justice Agha Faisal of the Sindh High Court. He claimed that all exits from the building were open and operational at the time of the incident.
Pasta stated, “Rescue services were activated only after the Fajr prayers, but by then it was too late, and the fire had become uncontrollable.”
He alleged, “The rescue teams lacked the equipment and masks necessary to enter the building and save people from the floors. There was also no foam available to extinguish the fire. No rescue efforts were made in the initial hours.”
