Top Democratic leaders are pressuring President Donald Trump, raising serious concerns about the escalating costs of war, the lack of a clear strategy, and the risks of a prolonged engagement.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer stated that there is no clear objective or strategy for the war. He remarked, “Trump’s war with Iran is now in its fourth week, and there is no end in sight.” Schumer also accused the President of failing to provide clear answers regarding future plans.
He criticized the White House’s statements as contradictory, saying, “What is happening? This is not the leadership of a Commander-in-Chief. Either he is confused, or he is not telling the truth, or both.”
Schumer linked the war to rising gasoline prices in the U.S., noting that the average price per gallon was about $2.93 a month ago but has now surged to $3.94. He pointed out that this increase is one of the largest monthly jumps seen since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
He called for transparency and accountability, urging Republican leaders to intervene. “We need accountability, we need transparency, and most importantly, we need a clear strategy and a way out,” he said.
Similarly, Senator Greg Landsman stated, “It is time to end the campaign in Iran. There should be no expansion or deployment of ground troops.” According to Landsman, U.S. forces have nearly destroyed Iran’s missile and drone launch capabilities, achieving the objective of targeting their weapons infrastructure. However, he warned that deeper involvement could entrap the U.S. in a long, strategy-less war.
Senator Peter Welch also criticized the government’s stance, opposing the requested $200 billion in funding for the war. He noted, “Our country is deeply engaged in the largest war of this generation, yet there has not been a single hearing in the Senate.”
Welch expressed concern over the economic impact, stating that gasoline prices have increased by at least $1 nationwide, costing the average American family an additional $2,000 annually. He also highlighted the rapid rise in prices for fertilizers and heating oil, which could add another $1,000 burden on families.
Senator Sara Jacobs described the situation as a significant blunder in U.S. foreign policy. She stated, “This may be one of the biggest mistakes in American foreign policy.” Jacobs emphasized that the government lacks a clear plan moving forward and has not communicated to the public what this war entails, its objectives, and its costs.
