Finlands President Urges India to Facilitate Ceasefire in West Asia

New Delhi, March 17: Tensions and insecurity are escalating in West Asia due to ongoing attacks between Israel, the United States, and Iran. In this context, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb has suggested that India could play a crucial diplomatic role in easing tensions between the U.S. and Iran. He has called for an immediate ceasefire amid the rising conflict in the region.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Stubb emphasized that global efforts should focus on halting hostilities and opening channels for dialogue. He noted that India might assist in diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

“We need a ceasefire. I am wondering if India can genuinely get involved in this. We have seen that Foreign Minister Jaishankar has called for a ceasefire to calm the situation,” he stated.

Stubb’s remarks come at a time when New Delhi is actively engaging in discussions with Tehran amid increasing confrontations in the region. Recently, India’s Foreign Minister held another round of telephone talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to discuss the rapidly changing circumstances.

During the conversation, Araghchi informed India about the latest developments, attributing the conflict to U.S. and Israeli attacks. He also mentioned Iran’s intention to exercise its right to self-defense and warned of significant regional and global repercussions if the situation escalates.

India is closely monitoring the situation, particularly due to concerns about regional stability, energy supply, and the safety of Indian citizens in the area. As part of its diplomatic efforts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian amid rising hostilities.

Following their discussion, PM Modi expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and the increasing number of civilian casualties. He emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of Indian citizens in the region, as well as maintaining uninterrupted supplies of goods and energy, is New Delhi’s top priority.
