Finch Advocates for Vaibhav Suryavanshis Inclusion in Indian Team

New Delhi, April 15: Aaron Finch, who led Australia to victory in the T20 World Cup 2021, believes it is the right time to include the explosive Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the Indian cricket team. The 15-year-old opener for Rajasthan Royals has made a significant impact in IPL 2026, scoring 200 runs at an average of 40, including two half-centuries in just five matches.

Speaking about the growing calls for Suryavanshi’s inclusion in the T20 squad, Finch emphasized a balanced approach. He stated that while it is essential to respect the experienced players who have won the World Cup, attention should also be given to the development of this young talent.

During the ‘Rivalry Week’ of IPL 2026, Finch remarked, “Perhaps it is the right time to integrate him into the team and give him some time. However, it is crucial to honor those players who work tirelessly for India. Playing cricket for India is one of the most pressure-filled tasks anyone can undertake. The current players have proven themselves on the biggest stage after recently winning the Under-19 World Cup. While we acknowledge this, we must also recognize the existing talent in the team. Yes, a brilliant young player is emerging, but the current players have established their worth.”

He added, “If a player’s form is lacking or if there are fitness issues due to injury, then why not consider Vaibhav for the team? He should be given a chance, but it is also important to let him play freely as a young player and continue learning. He learns quickly, whether it’s about technical or strategic aspects, but there is still much for him to absorb. I appreciate that he often approaches the game with different plans. This reflects his growth as a player and as a young individual. It is indeed a remarkable talent, and there is no doubt he will get his opportunity. However, we should not place excessive pressure on him; he should be allowed to play his game.”

Additionally, Finch highlighted young fast bowlers Prabhul Hinge and Saqib Hussain as standout stories of IPL 2026. He cautioned that their biggest challenge now will be how they prepare themselves after impressive performances against Rajasthan Royals and how they handle the mounting pressure.

Hinge took four wickets for 34 runs in his debut match, becoming the first bowler to take three wickets in his first over in IPL history. Meanwhile, Hussain also claimed four wickets for just 24 runs, leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to a 57-run victory over Rajasthan Royals.

As Sunrisers Hyderabad faces five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on Saturday evening, expectations are high for both bowlers to replicate their outstanding performances.

Finch stated, “They performed exceptionally well and were extraordinary. Their names could be among the biggest stories of this tournament. It was truly impressive to see such young and inexperienced players defeat a strong team like Rajasthan. The enthusiasm and passion they displayed were remarkable. There is no doubt that their real test will be how they maintain this performance.”

He concluded, “After a stellar performance, continuing to play can be challenging due to heightened expectations. The media scrutiny increases, pressure mounts, and public interest grows. This is warranted, as their story is genuinely inspiring. Therefore, it will be crucial for them to remain calm, recharge, and prepare to step back onto the field.”
