New Delhi, April 10: FIFA has unveiled new, even more expensive ticket categories for this year’s World Cup. Prices for front category 1 seats at the U.S. opener against Paraguay, scheduled for June 12 in Inglewood, California, can reach up to $4,105.
Last week, FIFA had set a maximum price of $2,735 for category 1 tickets but has now introduced a new “front category” pricing structure.
Additionally, a front category 2 tier has been added to the ticket sales website without prior announcement, with prices ranging from $1,940 to $2,330 for the U.S. opener. The Athletic was the first to report on these new categories.
The World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 across 16 cities in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
FIFA’s September 9 announcement described category 1 as “the highest-priced seats, located primarily in the lower tier,” but it seems some seats have been withheld from this category. Category 2 is defined as “positioned outside of category 1 areas, available in both lower and upper tiers.”
FIFA did not respond to an email inquiry sent to its media office for comments.
For Canada’s opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto, FIFA has also introduced front category 1 seats priced at up to $3,360.
In Philadelphia, $905 seats have been added for round of 16 games.
Last week, FIFA raised the top ticket price for the World Cup final to $10,990 during a glitch-prone reopening of sales. The previous price was $8,680, set after the tournament draw in December.
For the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, category 2 tickets now cost $7,380, up from $5,575, while category 3 tickets have increased to $5,785 from $4,185.
As of Thursday, no tickets appeared to be available for the final on FIFA’s ticket site.
